Practical support

Sometimes you do not need another course. You just need a good idea you can pick up and use.

Three practical ways to support everyday life

Choose personalised clinical movement support for one person, activity cards for everyday connection, or practical tip sheets that are easy to share with a care team.

Where this began

My first Exercise Physiology work was in a dementia wing

I began my Exercise Physiology career working in a dementia wing, and it was there that I discovered how powerful movement and sensory experiences could be.

I learnt very quickly that movement was about much more than completing a list of exercises. Music, rhythm, familiar objects, sensory experiences and simple opportunities to move could create moments of connection that felt completely different to a traditional exercise session.

Those early experiences have stayed with me throughout my career. They are a big part of why Senior Home Connection brings together personalised Exercise Physiology, sensory experiences, meaningful activity and human connection.

Movement can have a purpose without feeling like an exercise session.

Broader organisational support

Meaningful Moments

Help teams strengthen choice, participation, contribution and connection within everyday care.

The focus is practical implementation rather than giving workers another course to complete.

One idea across the whole site

Notice the person first

A useful activity is not useful just because it is on a card or in a program. The person's interests, abilities, communication and response should guide what happens next.

Notice

Pay attention to the person, their response and what seems meaningful to them.

Offer

Create an opportunity without turning participation into another demand.

Adapt

Change, simplify or stop when the original idea does not suit.

Meaning can be ordinary

Small everyday experiences can create movement and connection

Walking outside to look at the garden, reaching for something familiar, moving with music, helping prepare a drink or sitting together with something interesting to talk about can all have value.

Senior Home Connection is built around helping people notice more of these opportunities without forcing every moment to become therapy.

Choice, connection and participation

When an older parent says no

It can be hard when someone you love keeps saying no to help, movement, activities or leaving the house. Sometimes the most useful response is not to push harder, but to slow down and work out what the no may be telling you.
